Calming Chamomile: Essential Oil Spotlight

Roman Chamomile essential oil is widely cherished for its soothing and calmative properties. The aroma is sweet, fruity and herbaceous with hints of apple and straw. For me, opening a bottle of this delightful oil is like an instant dose of harmony – from the moment I inhale the beautiful scent, I can’t help but exhale a sigh of relief. Chamomile has been used for thousands of years by numerous cultures and remains a powerful, yet gentle, healing herb.

Amongst the different Chamomile varietals, Roman Chamomile is prized for its exceptional aroma. Growing natively in northern Africa and Western Europe, Roman Chamomile has now been cultivated all over the world (our Chamomile oil is sourced from here in the USA). The word “Chamomile” itself is derived from the ancient Greek meaning “earth apple” and was named for the plant’s apple-like aroma. Also known by gardeners as the “Plant’s Physician,” Chamomile can keep other plants nearby healthy and thriving in the garden ecosystem. Roman Chamomile along with its cousin German Chamomile are both consumed as the ever-popular herbal tea used for centuries for its ability to calm, soothe and relieve insomnia. Our OrganicChamomile Flower Canisters can be used for tea or added to a calming bath to soothe tired muscles or dry, irritated skin.

Its white and yellow flowers reach out to the sun, pulling light energy and healing down from the heavens. This sweet, nurturing oil brings warmth and illumination in times of darkness, instilling serenity and bringing awareness to the interconnected cosmic light that shines within all of us. As aromatherapist Valerie Ann Worwood points out, Chamomile also “connects with the inner child in us, allowing us to come closer to the spiritual realms for comfort and uniting.”

In addition to soothing the inner child, Chamomile essential oil is an effective yet gentle way to calm children and promote harmony by diffusing it in the home. Similarly, Kate included Roman Chamomile in Ghostbuster Aura Mist, our instant aromatherapy spray for kids and adults alike to help banish bad dreams and quell nighttime fears and worries.

Peace & Purification Anointing Oil also highlights Roman Chamomile where it comes together with Bulgarian Lavender to create a powerful healing tonic that is my go-to oil for anxiety, stress and headaches. I pour a quarter-size amount of Peace & Purification oil into my palm and rub my hands together for a palm inhalation before anointing my temples and third eye and finally massaging the oil into the back of the neck and shoulders. This self-care ritual is perfect for those stressful times in life and provides a much-needed reminder to step back for a moment and allow these healing essences from Mother Earth to support and nurture you. When these pure essential oils are applied topically, they enter the bloodstream and relax the entire nervous system.

Roman Chamomile is a versatile essential oil with numerous benefits that make it a valuable part of any essential oil collection. It is one of the safest essential oils and can be applied neat (without a carrier) to treat small areas (always test and when in doubt, dilute). However, those with ragweed allergies should be cautious, since it can sometimes irritate those with sensitivities to that plant family.

Since ancient times, Chamomile has been recognized as a potent healing plant. The Egyptians held it in the highest esteem and dedicated it to the Sun God, bringing light and divine healing energy down to earth. Ancient Greek doctors prescribed it for nervous conditions. It was also one of the “Nine Sacred Herbs” identified by the early Anglo-Saxons. Each time you inhale the scent of Roman Chamomile, feel your spirit soften and inner-peace wash over you. Honor the interconnectivity of all beings as you embrace a renewed sense of calm.
