The Four Elements are Wind (or Air), Fire, Water, and Earth. Our Universe was created on the foundation of these Four Elements and they are woven into the fabric of everything around us. Each of these elements of nature hold specific attributes that contribute to their overall individuality and power. Different cultures and community groups across the globe honor and work with these elements in different ways. Almost all Indigenous people work with the elements and most ancient societies were built around the elements. Here we will reference various methods of honoring the Four Elements based on Kate’s personal practices and teachings as she uses them in the western hemisphere.
The Four Elements, like people, are very individualistic and almost have their own personalities, as they are associated with the Four Directions (east, south, west, and north), seasons, animals, and even astrological signs.
Wind or Air is represented by the East, the season of Spring, and is the basis for focus, clarity, and intention setting. Astrological Air or Wind signs are Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius. Air signs are all about putting ideas and actions into motion. In Native American traditions the animal associated with the East is the eagle.
Fire is represented by the South, the season of Summer, and is associated with passion, fearlessness, overcoming obstacles, creativity, and tantric work. This element is represented in the form of a phoenix rising from the ashes to instill courage and strength. Astrological Fire signs are Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius. Fire signs are energetic, passionate, and dynamic. In Native American traditions the animal associated with the South is the wolf or coyote.
Water is represented by the West, the season of Fall, and is associated with emotions, fluidity, movement, flow, relationships, feelings, cleansing, and purification. Astrological Water signs are Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces. Water signs are usually very emotional, intuitive, creative, sensitive, and mysterious. In Native American traditions the animal associated with the West is the bear.
Earth is represented by the North, the season of Winter, and is the place of rebirth, manifestation, and earthly matters. Astrological Earth signs are Capricorn, Taurus, and Virgo. Earth signs are typically grounded, practical, and loyal. In Native American traditions the animal associated with the North is the buffalo.
Utilizing the Four Elements in your daily life can greatly benefit your spiritual practice. It can aid in the setting of your intentions and the way you understand the Universe. One can individually call upon the elements alone or within a group. To do this, form a circle, and begin by acknowledging each element as one of the Four Directions, starting in the East or the North. Continue to call out to each element in the correlating direction.
You can incorporate the use of the Four Elements in your own daily rituals and intention setting practices. Hang some wind chimes and know that whenever you hear them, the power of the Wind is with you. Light a candle or a bonfire to invoke the power of Fire. Draw a cleansing or ritual bath to bask in the healing and mysterious properties of Water. Go outside, plant some flowers or herbs, and relax into the stability of the Earth.
Many ancient cultures believed that everything in the universe was composed of Four Elements - Wind (Air), Fire, Water, and Earth. Human beings were thought to be made of and governed by these elements. Striving to find balance between each element was advocated by these cultures to enhance both mental and physical wellbeing. This ancient wisdom was the model for Kate’s Magik line of Aromatherapy Body Lotions.
Each element served as an aromatic inspiration to create the essential oil blends. The images behind the text on our lotion labels are inspired by crop circle designs from around the world. Hello and thank you. I have been sharing the 4 directions with many for years, we actually do the 7 direction prayer incorporating the sun and moon, the earth, and our souls. This is so beautiful to see being shared here. I was thrilled to read this today. Awesome suggestion for you…it would be amazing to be able to get all 4 lotions as a set in bottles that are a little smaller.
