✺ Beltane ✺ A threshold of fire, fertility and fuller life

Beltane arrives on May 1 as a seasonal threshold long associated in Ireland and Scotland with the beginning of summer. Historically, it marked the movement from winter holding into open pasturing, and fire stood at the center of the festival: cattle were driven between bonfires as a rite of protection before being led into summer grazing lands.

But Beltane is more than a date on the wheel. It carries the feeling of life crossing a threshold. After the inwardness of colder months, this is the season that turns us toward warmth, growth, sensuality, and participation in the living world.

It is a festival of vitality; not rushed but undeniable. Fire here is not only symbolic of heat or celebration. It is a force of blessing, renewal, and activation. 

In contemporary spiritual practice, Beltane is often held as a time of sacred union: spirit and body, desire and devotion, beauty and embodiment. It invites us to remember that aliveness is not separate from the sacred. Pleasure, creativity, connection, and presence are not distractions from meaning; they can be part of how meaning is felt. That is part of what makes Beltane so enduring. It does not ask us to leave the body behind. It asks us to inhabit it more fully.

Historically, homes, thresholds, and animals were adorned and blessed; fires were extinguished and rekindled; the season was welcomed not only as weather, but as a shift in atmosphere. This is a beautiful reminder that transitions are not only mental. They are sensory. Environmental. Lived through the body and through the spaces we inhabit.
