Blessed Summer Solstice Beautiful People,
This Saturday, June 20th is midsummer’s eve; the longest day of the year. The hawks that were born around the Spring Equinox in the heart of a Saguaro cactus on our neighboring land have grown up and now fly the desert sky as young adults. The Saguaro fruit is plentiful this year and we join the goats, birds, bats and coyotes by feasting on it daily. I’ve seen many snakes this season, but few poisonous ones; mainly long, curious gopher snakes that seek out the cool emanating from the cracks of our house. Legions of majestic desert iguanas have been frolicking in pairs, joyful as can be, while the road runners co-coo-coo-coo-cooooo in search of the perfect mate. A few days ago, while sitting with Stuart on a hilltop overlooking the sunset-lit valley attempting to unveil the mysteries of our time, we discovered a fearless silver fox spying on us just 10 feet away. This planet is a wondrous place.
All the while Tucsonans are evacuating their homes due to the hot Summer winds fueling a raging fire on our Catalina Mountains, COVID numbers are reported to be rising in Arizona and who would have ever thought we’d experience an imposed curfew in our lifetime?! Isn’t it baffling how safe and sound one world can seem, while the other is raging, tumbling and rebirthing? Interestingly, it seems to be the natural world vs the human world.
I have learned a lot in the last few weeks. With all the necessary eruptions around race as of late, I want to share some of my own personal contemplations and realizations. First, a little back story. I grew up in a liberal family on both sides; half Jewish American, half Swiss hippie. My childhood was mostly split between New York City and Bern, Switzerland. Having spent the majority of my first 7 years in New York, I was used to living in a melting pot of culture surrounded by a rainbow of ethnicity: Jewish, Italian, African American, Asian, Latin, Russian, Irish, Indian; you name it. That was normal and very comfortable for me. After my parents divorced, I moved to Switzerland with my mom, a place that felt stern and cold compared to what I was used to in NYC. However, my mother worked in the organization of the Bernese International Jazz Festival and the local Jazz club. I was therefore fortunate to be exposed and seeped in the culture of the Jazz musicians that would come and perform; the majority being Black Americans. As the daughter of “Lady Becker,” a nickname given to my mom by the late great Harry “Sweets” Edison,” I was treated like royalty and felt very much at home in the greenroom surrounded by the energy of these soulful people. To me, this warmth was the American way. I honestly did not know anything about racism, I just knew that I felt best with the energy of what I thought of as American and comparably foreign with the more Germanic way of life. And though I have now grown to love and respect Switzerland and my Swiss roots, living there during my formative years was a struggle and I always yearned for the warmth of the multiculturalism of NYC.
As soon as I was old enough to leave home, I traveled to Latin America where I ended up living for a few years, feeling very much at home with Latin culture. All my life, I’ve had a vast blend of friends from all corners of the world. Yet, I never thought much about race and I never even identified as white - marking the “other” box on forms. Until recent events, I did not perceive myself as different or fully comprehended the privilege of having pale skin. I now realize more than ever, that this was ignorance. Maybe this was a result of experiencing some anti-Semitism as a child since I always proudly identified as Jewish, due to my extremely loving Jewish family. Possibly it’s when I realized that even as a half Jew, I would have been killed in Europe during World War II, that I felt less “white.” These are all the things I have been contemplating more than ever, during this time of revolution and awakening. Before living in Tucson all I knew of America was New York City and other crosscultural places such as Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, etc. I had never directly witnessed racism with any of my friends. But now, remembering a conversation with my friend Cleve, a Black conga player from NYC, while on tour in New Mexico he told me that every time he walks into a store, a detective or a camera follows him. I looked at him in disbelief and he said, “Girl, walk a day in my shoes!”
PLEASE join me in contemplating your own personal place in this battle. Let’s imagine “ walking a day” in the shoes of a Black sister or brother.

It’s June and the days are getting longer, rapidly moving towards the Summer Solstice on June 20th. On Saturday, June 20th we also welcome an extraordinary Solar Eclipse, as the Moon will pass perfectly between the Earth and the Sun, creating an Annular Solar Eclipse for fortunate observers across Africa and Asia. It is an incredibly rare occurrence to have a Solstice Solar Eclipse; this only happens every 19 years. To make this day even more magikal, the New Moon is in Cancer, as Cancer season begins on Saturday as well. Summer Solstice 2020 will be a very auspicious day for balance, magic and rebirth and a powerful time to rethink our goals as we harness the power of the sun.
The Summer Solstice signifies the ending of the flowering season (Spring) as the Sun reaches its highest point in the Northern Hemisphere. With the beginning of Summer, we enter a time of growth, maturity and the forthcoming harvest season. Like the days before the Full Moon, this is a perfect time to take those extra steps to get us closer to our goals and fill our hearts with gratitude for the tangible and spiritual abundance we have in our lives. It’s also an ideal time to clearly set our intentions for the next cycle to come. Once daylight reaches its peak on June 20th, we’ll start moving towards harvest season as the fruits of our efforts ripen and the days start shortening.
Celebrate the Summer Solstice or Litha (the Celtic word for light) with rituals to honor the Sun and your inner light! Let us honor our journey, the gifts, abundance and blessings we’ve received - light fires and candles, sing songs, place flowers on tables and decorate altars in honor of the sun and set intentions once again for the abundance of this year’s harvest. More than ever, let’s think not only of ourselves but also of our families, community and the world we inhabit.
Create a Summer Solstice altar with bright flowers, seasonal fruits and vegetables, candles to symbolize the light of the sun, statues or photos of deities that go with the season or benefit your current spiritual work. On the Kate’s Magik Summer Solstice altar, you can see offerings of prickly pear fruits, strawberries, flowers, candles, crystals, a drum, Ganesh the remover of obstacles, Bastet, Ra the sun god, Sekhmet, Isis and La Virgen de Guadalupe or Mother Mary.
Arrange flowers and flower petals in a mandala or sun as you mindfully meditate on the Summer Solstice or piece together flower stems and plants to create a flower crown!
Soak up the sun! Get outside and garden, take a hike, sit by the water, meditate outside or read a book in your favorite outdoor spot.
This year, instead of heading to Stonehenge to see the Summer sun peeking through the stones, you can livestream the sunset and sunrise right from your home on the English Heritage Facebook Page!

On a trip to the Egyptian wing of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, Kate found herself inexplicably drawn to a giant statue of Sekhmet; the lion-headed solar goddess of destruction and ferocious healing.
