Relationships are the most important thing in our lives. They are the most rewarding and the most challenging. Unless we live in solitude somewhere off the grid in nature, we generally exchange energy with people all day long. From our immediate family and friends, to work colleagues, to people we deal with at the grocery store or even the person we bump into on the street. Every time we share space with another person (or even animal) we have the opportunity to create positive or negative vibrations. Relationships are our greatest teachers. Through the exchange of words, expressions and vibrations we can experience a full scale of emotions. This can range from intellectual stimulation and the sharing of thought patterns to inflicting and receiving pain, and furthermore to feeling the greatest high through laughter, love and joy.

Generally a lack of self-esteem results in judgment of others. Instead of looking within, at the source of our insecurity, we often chose to blame and become defensive. It might be our human instinct to fight when we feel attacked, yet the healing begins with acceptance of the situation. If we can remember, in the midst of an emotional storm, that a conflict is an opportunity for growth, we can find stillness in the moment and allow the situation to breathe. Ideally, we center ourselves and care for our own emotional wellbeing before taking action. For me personally, it is difficult to allow a situation to be unresolved, so I strive to find a resolution through communication, understanding and forgiveness.

We might only have a short while to spend with someone (in this lifetime) before the lessons are learned, while other times there may be many years or even a an entire life of unlimited opportunities for learning. On occasion we separate from others in order to come back together when both parties are ready to move forward. Sometimes we need to learn to let go and walk away.

There are also relationships that will challenge us to the core, which is where the greatest work can be done. Often these are family members who have been bound to us in order to impart the greatest lessons. But if we keep in mind that we are all interconnected and that every relationship is eternal, we will be able to grow and heal more quickly, while being accepting of our fellow Beings. One of the last things my wise friend Alex said before he left this world was that every encounter is karmic, even the person who honks at us, or the people that challenge us. Every relationship is eternal.

We all share the same pulse of our mother earth and we are all anchored in love.  If we carry this awareness, we’ll be less quick to judge and more prone to share kindness.

With Love,
Kate
